Making Math Healthy and Fun!: Third Week

Third Week

We learned that plants need soil, water, and light to grow. Using this knowledge, we were ready to plant our fruits and vegetables. Students chose their plant and planted them in our planters. To recognize Earth Day, we also created several class planters out of spare water bottles. It has been a wonderful week!

Purpose

Imagine a world where students come to school eager to eat vegetables and learn about math. Using Michelle Obama’s initiative toward healthy eating and fresh grown produce, this project will aspire to teach, encourage, and inspire students to become healthier while practicing crucial mathematical skills. This project will serve to allow students to see the influence of math and healthy eating on their everyday lives. Working with four groups of 8-13 students with cognitive disabilities, each student will learn and practice math skills such as addition, subtraction, identifying fractions, graphing, and measurement. Through the course of the project, we will plant a vegetable, make healthy snacks, role-play purchasing items, and learn fractions through food. Students will have the opportunity to learn from peer role-models from Jesuit High School during the project.
