Second Week

We continued to explore fractions and how to write and show fractions. Through SmartBoard activities, I-Pad apps, and worksheets, we are learning about halves, thirds, and fourths. Students also participated in a "Fraction Egg Hunt" where we searched for plastic eggs containing fraction problems. We solved the problems on the white board in the teacher's lounge. It was great fun!

Purpose

Imagine a world where students come to school eager to eat vegetables and learn about math. Using Michelle Obama’s initiative toward healthy eating and fresh grown produce, this project will aspire to teach, encourage, and inspire students to become healthier while practicing crucial mathematical skills. This project will serve to allow students to see the influence of math and healthy eating on their everyday lives. Working with four groups of 8-13 students with cognitive disabilities, each student will learn and practice math skills such as addition, subtraction, identifying fractions, graphing, and measurement. Through the course of the project, we will plant a vegetable, make healthy snacks, role-play purchasing items, and learn fractions through food. Students will have the opportunity to learn from peer role-models from Jesuit High School during the project.
