First Week

To open the project, students created a 'lap book' that they will use throughout the unit. Students were given a pre-test to see their knowledge of fractions and graphing. Students were allowed to sample various fruits and vegetables. We discussed the basics about plants and how they grow. Students were asked whether they liked the fruits and vegetables and graphed the results on a bar graph.

Purpose

Imagine a world where students come to school eager to eat vegetables and learn about math. Using Michelle Obama’s initiative toward healthy eating and fresh grown produce, this project will aspire to teach, encourage, and inspire students to become healthier while practicing crucial mathematical skills. This project will serve to allow students to see the influence of math and healthy eating on their everyday lives. Working with four groups of 8-13 students with cognitive disabilities, each student will learn and practice math skills such as addition, subtraction, identifying fractions, graphing, and measurement. Through the course of the project, we will plant a vegetable, make healthy snacks, role-play purchasing items, and learn fractions through food. Students will have the opportunity to learn from peer role-models from Jesuit High School during the project.
