Awesome Math Trick!

1. Ask a friend to pick any number
2. Tell them to add 5
3. Multiply by 2
4. Subtract 4
5. Divide by 2
6. Subtract their original number

No matter what number they pick, the answer will always be 3!

For example:

I pick 7

7 + 5 = 12
12 x 2 = 24
24 - 4 = 20
20/2 = 10
10 - 7 = 3

Pretty cool, huh?

Purpose

Imagine a world where students come to school eager to eat vegetables and learn about math. Using Michelle Obama’s initiative toward healthy eating and fresh grown produce, this project will aspire to teach, encourage, and inspire students to become healthier while practicing crucial mathematical skills. This project will serve to allow students to see the influence of math and healthy eating on their everyday lives. Working with four groups of 8-13 students with cognitive disabilities, each student will learn and practice math skills such as addition, subtraction, identifying fractions, graphing, and measurement. Through the course of the project, we will plant a vegetable, make healthy snacks, role-play purchasing items, and learn fractions through food. Students will have the opportunity to learn from peer role-models from Jesuit High School during the project.
